Austria has announced a full national Covid-19 lockdown starting on Monday.

This development has come days after the country imposed a lockdown on the those that are yet to be vaccinated.

According to Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, the lockdown would last a maximum of 20 days and there would be a legal requirement to get vaccinated from 1 February 2022.

Schallenberg in reaction to the situation, responded to record cases numbers and one of the lowest vaccination levels in Western Europe.

Meanwhile, the situation is not different some other European countries who have also made the same move to impose restrictions as cases rise.

Part of Schallenberg’s move towards the situation was the comments he made after his meeting with governors of Austria’s nine provinces at a resort in western Austria.

He said, “We don’t want a fifth wave.”

The chancellor stated that, there had been a consensus over avoiding mandatory vaccinations, for a long time.
