China has unveiled plans to build Africa’s first insulin production facility in Nigeria, a move expected to revolutionize diabetes management on the continent.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, announced the project on Wednesday during a reception in Abuja to mark China’s 76th National Day. According to him, the facility will not only reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported insulin but also position the country as a hub for African medical biotechnology.
Yu described the initiative as part of China-Nigeria cooperation in critical sectors. He also cited the recently completed Abuja Water Supply Project—which now delivers 480 cubic meters of clean water daily to nearly three million residents—as another example of China’s partnership in Nigeria’s development.
The envoy emphasized that the project reflects China’s commitment to supporting Africa’s growth through “equal and pragmatic collaboration.” Noting that both nations share October 1st as their national day, he highlighted the symbolic strength of the bilateral relationship.
