China Declares Support for Nigeria, Opposes US President Trump’s Threat

China has strongly opposed threats of sanctions or military action against Nigeria by the United States over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.

The Chinese government stated its position through its Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, during a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

The statement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration on October 31 designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” amid claims that Christian communities face threats in some parts of the country.

Mao Ning reaffirmed China’s backing of Nigeria’s sovereignty, describing the two nations as “comprehensive strategic partners.”

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path suited to its national reality,” she said.

“We oppose any country interfering in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanctions and the use of force.”

Beijing’s statement underscores its growing diplomatic alignment with Nigeria at a time of rising international attention over domestic security and human-rights issues.
