The Mountain of Fire Area Community Development Association has petitioned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission over the poor service of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to the customers in the community.
In a letter addressed to NERC, dated September 24, 2019 and signed by the Chairman of the CDA, Mr. Alex Akala, the community complained about unsatisfactory service and extortion of customers by the IBEDC Ibafo/Magboro Business hub.
The petition, with the title, “Refund of Expenditure for the Purchase and Repair of Transformers, Cables and Other Accessories”, also revealed among other things, the various meetings between the community and the IBEDC in which the company resolved to provide transformer and improve its service.
However, nothing has been done since then, except that the IBEDC has continued to impose outrageous estimated bill on the residents despite its poor service.
In the petition, the MFM Area CDA requested for two functional feeder pillars to replace the bad one; one transformer to replace the bad one, which was earlier reported and observed by IBEDC itself as not good at all for service; it also sought compensation to residents of MFM Area CDA for unsatisfactory service and extortion by IBEDC.
The community association also demanded from the IBEDC pre-paid meter to all its customers in the area within the shortest time so as to stop the estimated billing system.
It also requested for adequate supply of power to all residents and asked the IBEDC to stop the special supply to firms in the area to the detriment of the association who procured the power assets.
Speaking to our correspondent, the CDA chairman, Mr. Akala explained that the leadership of the association had been so civil with the IBEDC by curbing the residents from staging a public protest but IBEDC had not helped matters.
He said, “It is impressive to note that MFM AREA CDA has over 400 buildings with not less than 1500 household that pay bills on monthly basis. A new 500kva 33 ABB was bought recently to support our area with contribution from members of the community but IBEDC has refused to energize it. We requested for transformer, IBEDC failed, we contributed money and bought one, the company has failed to install it for us.”
Akala stated that the community had resolved to disconnect itself from the service provider; IBEDC, adding, “No bill should be brought to the community forthwith. All infrastructure provided by the CDA are now being enjoyed by business outfits and firms in the area without considering the community that financed it.”
It was gathered that the IBEDC was providing 24 hours power supply to the firms in the area while the residents sleep in darkness everyday.
