BREAKING: FG Removes Mathematics as Compulsory Requirement for Arts Students

The Federal Government has officially announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into Arts and Humanities programmes in Nigerian universities and polytechnics.

The new policy, which applies to candidates presenting WAEC or NECO results, was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Education on Monday.

According to the ministry, the guideline is aimed at easing access to higher education and eliminating barriers that previously hindered many Arts students from gaining admission.

📌 Key points of the new directive:

Mathematics is no longer compulsory for Arts and Humanities courses.

English Language remains mandatory for all programmes.

Mathematics will still be required for Science, Technology, Engineering, and select Social Science courses.

The new rule is expected to take effect from the next admission cycle.

Education stakeholders have described the move as a major reform in Nigeria’s admission policy, especially for students pursuing fields like Literature, History, Philosophy, Theatre Arts, and Languages.

The development has already sparked reactions among students, parents, and academic unions, with many calling it “a long-overdue policy shift.”
