BREAKING: Cholera Outbreak in Niger State Claims 13 Lives, Over 236 Hospitalised
A deadly cholera outbreak has hit six local government areas in Niger State, killing 13 people and hospitalising over 236 residents, according to state health officials.
The outbreak was first reported on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area, but has since spread rapidly to Bosso, Minna (Chanchaga), Magama, Bida, and Munya LGAs. Authorities say Shiroro, Bosso, and Chanchaga (Minna) are among the hardest-hit.
Health workers on the ground have reported escalating numbers of infections, triggering an emergency response from the state Ministry of Health. Mobile clinics and isolation centres have been set up in affected areas, and residents are being urged to adhere strictly to hygiene protocols and report any symptoms immediately.
The Niger State Government has activated a Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC) and deployed medical teams to contain the spread. Efforts are also underway to ensure access to safe drinking water and improve sanitation in rural communities.
Cholera, a waterborne disease, thrives in unsanitary conditions and can cause severe dehydration and death if not treated quickly.
Officials have appealed to the federal government and international health organisations for urgent support, including medical supplies, vaccines, and health personnel.
Residents are advised to:
Boil or treat drinking water
Avoid open defecation
Wash hands regularly with soap
Report suspected cases immediately to the nearest health centre
Health authorities warn the toll could rise unless urgent containment measures are taken.
More updates to follow as the situation develops.
