Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies at 91

The paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebu, has died at the age of 91.
Family and palace sources confirmed his passing on Sunday evening after a brief illness. An official announcement from the Ogun State Government and the royal family is expected shortly.
Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, ascended the throne on April 2, 1960. A revered monarch, he was widely respected for his intellect, progressive leadership, and unwavering commitment to the development of Ijebuland and the Yoruba nation.
He played a prominent role in national affairs, consistently advocating for justice, democratic governance, and cultural preservation. The late Awujale was also known for his bold views on public policy and national politics, which earned him both admiration and influence across political divides.
His demise marks the end of a remarkable 65-year reign, which brought infrastructural, educational, and cultural advancement to Ijebu communities.

Burial arrangements will be announced by the royal family in conjunction with the Ogun State Government.
