APC Sweeps Lagos LG Polls
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the just concluded Lagos State local government elections, winning all the chairmanship positions across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), which announced the results on Sunday, also confirmed that the APC clinched 375 out of 376 councillorship seats, solidifying the party’s dominance in grassroots politics in the state.
The elections, held on Saturday, were marked by low voter turnout in several areas, though no major cases of violence were reported.
Opposition parties have rejected the results, alleging irregularities and voter suppression, and have hinted at possible legal action.
Meanwhile, APC leaders and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have commended the peaceful conduct of the polls, describing the outcome as a reaffirmation of the people’s trust in the ruling party.
LASIEC has yet to officially publish detailed results for each council area but reiterated its commitment to transparency and electoral integrity.
In a major upset, the Peoples Democratic Party secured a rare victory in Ward D of the Yaba LCDA, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated the APC Candidate.
Dosunmu, a former APC member, defected to the PDP shortly before the poll.
LASIEC described the elections as largely peaceful, despite concerns raised about voter turnout and alleged irregularities in some areas.
The newly elected council chairmen and councillors are expected to be sworn in later this month.
