AFRICAN FIRST LADIES HONOR SENATOR REMI TINUBU FOR ADVANCING WOMEN’S WELFARE AND EDUCATION
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been formally recognized by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) for her impactful interventions in girl-child education, hygiene, and maternal health. The prestigious acknowledgment was presented during the 29th and 30th Ordinary General Assemblies of the forum held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, received the honor on her behalf.
The recognition highlights Senator Tinubu’s dedicated efforts in reducing maternal and child mortality rates and her consistent provision of welfare support for mothers and children across Nigeria. These initiatives align with the goals of OAFLAD’s “We Are Equal” campaign, which serves as a continental catalyst for gender equality, economic empowerment, and educational advancement for women.
During the summit, prominent African leaders, including the First Lady of Sierra Leone and OAFLAD Chairperson, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, alongside the First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, commended Senator Tinubu’s role as a vocal advocate for women’s rights. Their praises underscored the significance of her work in a broader continental context, particularly as African nations strive to unify against the unique challenges facing women and children in conflict zones.
The assembly also reinforced the vital link between peace and sustainable development. Dr. Maada Bio noted that the full realization of women’s rights is inextricably tied to stable environments, while First Lady Lordina Mahama emphasized the necessity of investing in girl-child education and supporting female artisans. By honoring Senator Tinubu, the organization reaffirms its commitment to celebrating leaders who prioritize the socio-economic elevation of women as a cornerstone for Africa’s progress.
