AFCON FALLOUT:- Gabon bans Aubameyang from National Team
Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been handed an indefinite ban from the Gabon national team following the country’s disastrous outing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Aubameyang, alongside national team captain Bruno Ecuélé Manga, was sanctioned after Gabon suffered three consecutive defeats in Group F.
The Panthers lost 1–0 to Cameroon, fell 3–2 to Mozambique, and were beaten 3–2 by Ivory Coast, crashing out of the tournament without a point.
Gabon’s Acting Minister of Sports, Dr. Simplice Désiré Mamboula, confirmed the decision on Thursday, reacting strongly to the team’s poor performances.
The announcement came a day after the final group-stage loss to Ivory Coast.
In addition to the individual sanctions, the minister also ordered the dissolution of the Gabon national team structure, including the Thierry Mouyouma-led coaching crew, as part of sweeping measures aimed at addressing the team’s failure at the continental showpiece.
The decision marks a significant development for Gabonese football, with Aubameyang’s international future now in serious doubt following the unprecedented disciplinary action.
