Abuja – The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Alhaji Ahmed Idris, has advised public sector accountants to ensure prudent and judicious management of public funds for effective implementation of government programmes.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday by the Deputy Director, Press, Office of the AGF, Mr Ifeanyi Okereke.

According to the statement, Idris gave the advice when the executive members of the Association of the National Accountants of Nigeria, (ANAN) FCT branch, paid him a visit.

Idris said the decline in the revenue of the government as a result of the fall in the oil price was capable of affecting governance negatively if not properly managed.

"ANAN, whose members are controllers of funds in the civil service, must see themselves as critical stakeholders in this administration.

"I urge you to be more innovative, efficient and prudent in the management of the available resources", he said.

Idris pledged his commitment to upholding the professional ethics of the body in the discharge of his duties.

The AGF also assured that the nation's treasury under his watch would be prudently and transparently managed to ensure that the change promised by President Buhari was reflected in the lives of Nigerians.

The Chairman ANAN, FCT Chapter, Mr Benjamin Ogbeide, commended the AGF on his appointment and pledged the commitment and support of ANAN in ensuring the excellent discharge of his duty.
