National Grid Collapse For The 12Th Time In 2024

National Grid Collapses for the 12th Time in 2024

FOR THE twelfth time this year, Nigeria’s national power grid has collapsed, plunging the entire country into darkness.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, leaving millions of households, businesses, and essential services without electricity.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal showed zero megawatts (MW) as of 2:00 pm.

The collapse, confirmed by a tweet from the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid, indicated that the failure happened at around 2:09 pm.

The tweet stated, “The major grid setback has occurred, and restoration is to commence.”

Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Disco) also confirmed the development, noting that the grid went down at approximately 1:33p.m.

In a statement issued to customers, the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Friday Elijah, expressed hope for a swift restoration.

“We aim to resume power supply as soon as grid operations normalise,” he assured.

This marks the twelfth grid failure in 2024, stressing the chronic instability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

From January to November alone, the grid had collapsed 11 times.

The recurrent outages continue to cripple economic activities, disrupt daily life, and spark frustrations nationwide.

Efforts to address the underlying technical challenges remain sluggish, with no concrete timeline for a sustainable solution.

Authorities are reportedly working to restore power.
