Breaking: Lagos Assembly Dismisses Alimosho LG Chairman

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have unanimously suspended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Jelili Sulaimon.

The lawmakers, in a plenary on Monday, disclosed that the community’s Vice Chairman, Akinpelu Johnson should take over chairmanship position in the council.

While stating the dismissal is to immediately effected, the legislators instructed the management of the council to recognize the authority of the incoming Chairman and accord him all the support to make him work effectively.

The legislative arm mentioned that the suspended Chairman displayed an act of non-compliance, defiance and unyielding attitude to the legislative House.

Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, while moving the dismissal motion recalled that in April 2024, pandemonium broke out in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho Local Government leading to the death of one Micheal Ajayi.

Okanlawon, uttered three were traces of Sulaimon masterminding the pandemonium. He said that all stakeholders involved in the issue were invited, but the evicted Chairman continued to show acts of misconduct to the committee of the House.

The lawmaker added that Sulaimon failed to adhere to the Assembly’s directives alongside occurrences of mismanagement of public funds.

He said: “His immediate suspension in line with relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“He should be suspended immediately while the vice chairman, Akin Johnson, takes over with immediate effect.”

Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, supported the submission of Okanlawon and stated that the action would make other local government chairmen act accordingly.

Adams said: “The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. There has been a lot of misconducts from him and I support that the chairman be suspended indefinitely.”

The House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, referred to the report submitted by the State Auditor-General concerning the activities of Sulaimon. According to the lawmakers, the report revealed that the council chairman had consistently put up non-compliance with financial regulations, with significant irregularities in his records.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, while presiding over the sitting, stated that there will be communication on the Assembly’s resolution to all relevant authorities.
