Protests have started in Paris after President Emmanuel Macron pushed through legislation to raise the retirement age for most workers to 64 from 62 without a vote of lawmakers in the National Assembly on Thursday.
Mr. Macron’s decision triggered a protest which forced through controversial pension reforms without calling a vote in the parliament. This also set the stage for a no-confidence vote against his government.
It was a dramatic moment inside the assembly chamber, where opposition lawmakers sang the French national anthem and banged on their desks.
The development was not different on the streets when protesters pledged to continue their fight against Mr. Macron’s proposal.
So far, Thousands of demonstrators have gathered on Thursday afternoon in Place de la Concorde in Paris in response to Macron’s move.
