Côte d’Ivoire Beat Nigeria 2-1 To Lift 2023 AFCON Trophy

The Elephants of Cote d’ Ivoire on Sunday won the 2023 African Cup of Nations after beating the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 in the finals of the tournament in Ivory Coast.

In the first half, Captain William Troost-Ekong put Nigeria ahead while Franck Kessie equalised just after the hour mark and Haller turned in Simon Adingra’s cross in the 81st minute to spark wild celebrations among the sea of orange in the Abidjan stands.

The win for Ivory Coast makes it the third after claiming Ivory Coast claimed the title in 1992 and 2015.

As the Super Eagles missed the opportunity to equal the Ghanaian rivals on four victories, only Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana have won the title more often.

The Super Eagles team which was spearheaded by reigning African player of the year Osimhen, had looked the most formidable team in the competition over the last month.

Interestingly, Ivory Coast have made history, becoming the first host country to win the AFCON since 2006.
