Tinubu Arrives in United Kingdom for Historic State Visit to Windsor Castle
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in England on Tuesday afternoon following his departure from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja earlier that morning. Accompanied by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the President’s arrival marks the commencement of a landmark two-day state visit at the invitation of His Majesty, King Charles III. This visit is particularly significant as it represents the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years and distinguishes President Tinubu as the first Nigerian head of state to be hosted at the historic Windsor Castle.
Upon his arrival, the President was received by senior British officials and representatives of the Monarch, signaling the high diplomatic priority placed on the visit. The trip is designed to reinforce the longstanding bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with a specific focus on modernizing the partnership through enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, security, and cultural exchange.
The official itinerary for the visit is packed with high-level engagements and ceremonial honors. On Wednesday, the formal proceedings will begin with a grand ceremonial welcome on Datchet Road, where the President will be greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales. This will be followed by a guard of honor inspection and a traditional carriage procession to Windsor Castle. At the castle, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will formally receive the President and the First Lady for a state luncheon at St. George’s Hall, accompanied by a 21-gun salute.
Beyond the Royal ceremonies, the President’s schedule includes critical diplomatic and economic discussions. President Tinubu is slated to hold private talks with King Charles III and participate in interfaith dialogue sessions. A pivotal moment of the visit will be the bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. During this engagement, both leaders are expected to witness the signing of a significant £746 million financing agreement aimed at the refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex and other maritime infrastructure. The President will also attend a business summit with Nigerian and British investors and meet with members of the Nigerian diaspora before concluding the visit with a grand State Banquet hosted by the Royal Family.
