HENRY NWOSU:- 1980 AFCON Winner Dies At 62
Former Nigerian international Henry Nwosu, the youngest member of the country’s victorious squad at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, has died.
His passing was confirmed on Saturday by fellow member of the historic team, Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that the former midfielder died in the early hours of the morning after several days in intensive care.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu had been receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been admitted since Wednesday.
In a tribute message announcing the news, Odegbami expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his former teammate.
“After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 a.m. this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday,” he wrote.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to convey the news of the death of Henry Nwosu, MON, the youngest member of the victorious 1980 AFCON squad. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”
Nwosu was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation that secured the country’s first continental title at the 1980 tournament, a triumph widely regarded as a landmark moment in the history of Nigerian football.
His death marks the loss of one of the figures associated with that historic victory.
