UN ADOPTS RESOLUTION CONDEMNING IRAN’S ATTACKS ON GULF AND ARAB COUNTRIES

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Gulf and Arab countries, with 135 nations co-sponsoring the resolution.

China and Russia abstained from voting, rather than vetoing it.

The resolution, presented by Bahrain, emphasizes support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Gulf states and Jordan, and demands Iran should immediately halt its attacks.

The vote reflects a broad international condemnation of Iran’s actions, with U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz stating that Iran’s strategy of sowing chaos has backfired.

Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir-Saeid Iravani, criticized the resolution as a “blatant misuse” of the Security Council’s mandate.

Iran is attacking its neighboring states in retaliation for the U.S. and Israel’s strikes on its territory.

The conflict escalated after the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the initial attacks, triggering the launch of missiles and drones at Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. military installations.

Iran’s operations target neighbours including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The attacks are seen as a way for Iran to inflict pain on the U.S. and its allies, particularly the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has a decades-long strategic alliance with Washington.

Iran views the UAE as a key U.S. partner and a major node in global finance, aviation, and trade.

The conflict has resulted in significant damage and casualties, with over 2,000 Iranian missiles and drones targeting Gulf states, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.

The international community has condemned Iran’s actions, with the UN Security Council adopting a resolution strongly condemning the attacks.
