Renowned Literary Scholar Biodun Jeyifo Dies at 8

Professor Biodun Jeyifo, one of Nigeria’s foremost literary critics and public intellectuals, has died at the age of 80.

Widely respected in academic and literary circles, Jeyifo — fondly known as BJ — was celebrated for his formidable intellect, sharp polemics, and enduring contributions to African literary criticism.

A first-class graduate and distinguished scholar, he was the first president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and notably its youngest at the time of his election. His tenure marked a defining moment in the history of university unionism in Nigeria.

Often described as Soyinka’s “literary son,” he was regarded as one of the most authoritative critics and interpreters of Soyinka’s works, producing rigorous analyses that shaped global understanding of modern African literature.

Among his notable works is Truthful Lies, a collection that reflects his depth of thought, critical engagement, and intellectual courage.
Throughout his career, Jeyifo combined scholarship with activism, maintaining a strong voice on issues of democracy, culture, and social justice.

His passing marks the end of an era in African literary criticism and progressive intellectual engagement.

He is remembered as a scholar of immense depth, a mentor to generations of academics, and a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual tradition.
