COUNTER TERRORISM
U.S. to Send 200 Troops to Aid Nigeria’s Fight Against Insurgents
The United States is deploying 200 troops to Nigeria to help combat Islamist insurgents, specifically Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
This move is part of a broader effort to enhance military cooperation between the U.S. and Nigeria, with the troops providing training and technical guidance to Nigerian Forces.
The deployment comes after President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Nigeria in December 2025, following pressure from Washington for Nigeria to act against Islamist militants.
The Nigerian government has denied allegations of Christian persecution, stating that it is targeting Islamist fighters and other armed groups that attack both Christians and Muslims.
Reports say the U.S. troops will not be involved in direct combat or operations but will focus on training and technical support, including helping Nigerian forces coordinate air strikes and ground troops.
