TRAIN DERAILMENT NEAR BARCELONA KILLS DRIVER, DOZENS INJURED
A train driver has been killed and at least 37 people injured, five of them seriously, after a commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona.
Local officials say the Rodalies train struck a retaining wall, which then collapsed onto the tracks. The crash happened on the line between Gelida and Sant SadurnÃ, a busy commuter route in Catalonia.
Catalonia’s regional fire inspector, Claudi Gallardo, confirmed that all passengers have now been removed from the train, with emergency services continuing to assess the scene.
The incident comes just two days after a deadly two-train collision in southern Spain, raising renewed concerns over rail safety.
The derailment occurred amid severe weather conditions, as heavy storms battered north-eastern Spain. Authorities have placed coastal areas in eastern and north-western Spain on high alert, warning of dangerous conditions.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with weather conditions expected to be a key focus.
