President Tinubu Departs for Europe Ahead of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit
LAGOS — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Lagos for Europe, marking the start of a journey that will transition from his year-end break into a high-level diplomatic mission in the Middle East.
The President left the country on Sunday, December 28, following the Christmas holidays. While he is currently in Europe for a brief private stay, his ultimate destination is Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he is scheduled to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
The visit to the UAE comes at the official invitation of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. President Tinubu is set to participate in the prestigious 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit, which convenes in early January.
The ADSW is a premier annual event that serves as a melting pot for world leaders, industry giants, and civil society.
The 2026 edition, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” aims to bridge the gap between climate ambition and tangible action through three primary pillars: innovation, finance, and people. It focuses on showcasing how the world can move forward with confidence by connecting ambition with action across all systems.
This trip underscores the strengthening relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, particularly in the sectors of renewable energy and economic cooperation. By attending the summit, President Tinubu aims to position Nigeria as a key player in the “next era” of sustainable development, seeking to attract investment and foster partnerships that align with the nation’s growth objectives.
According to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria immediately following the conclusion of the week-long summit.
