ECOWAS SUSPENDS GUINEA-BISSAU FOLLOWING CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS
The ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making bodies of the regional bloc with immediate effect.
The decision was taken after an emergency virtual meeting held late Thursday, chaired by President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, who is the current Chairperson of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
In its communiqué, the MSC stated: “The MSC decides, in accordance with the provisions of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance 2001 (A/SP/12/01), to suspend Guinea-Bissau from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies until the restoration of full and effective constitutional order in the country.”
The suspension comes amid concerns over recent political developments in Guinea-Bissau that the regional body considers a threat to constitutional order and democratic governance. ECOWAS has called for the swift restoration of constitutional normality in the country.
