Tinubu Declares Security Emergency, Orders Recruitment of 20,000 New Police Officers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency and ordered an expanded recruitment drive across Nigeria’s security agencies to curb rising insecurity in several parts of the country.

According to a statement issued from the State House, the President directed the Nigeria Police Force to recruit 20,000 additional personnel, raising the total recruitment target to 50,000 officers under the current security reform programme.

The President also approved the temporary use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps as training facilities to fast-track the intake process.

Tinubu said the measures were part of broader efforts to strengthen internal security operations, enhance rapid response capacity, and ensure adequate personnel deployment to vulnerable communities nationwide.

Further details on timelines for the recruitment and the deployment strategy are expected from the police authorities and the Ministry of Interior.
