FG to Launch Multi-Million-Dollar Sugar Project in Taraba
The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) and the Lee Group have moved closer to establishing a major sugar production facility in Taraba State, a project expected to boost Nigeria’s drive for self-sufficiency in sugar production.
A high-level delegation, led by NSDC Executive Secretary/CEO Mr. Kamar Bakrin and accompanied by the Lee Group management team, visited Jalingo, the state capital, to secure the support and collaboration of Governor Agbu Kefas and his administration.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Bakrin explained that the visit was aimed at exploring a significant sugar investment in the state. “Sugar is an incredibly significant socio-economic product globally, employing about 100 million people in over 120 countries. Sugar estates are often located in rural areas, driving local development while contributing positively to environmental sustainability,” he said.
He further highlighted the Council’s mandate in supporting investors through financing, feasibility studies, land access, training, extension services, and sugarcane research. According to him, a national survey identified around 1.2 million hectares across Nigeria suitable for sugar production, with Taraba ranking among the most strategically positioned. “Taraba State has passed all our technical and environmental suitability criteria with flying colours. The Lee Group, through its subsidiary GNAAL Sugar, meets our requirements as a credible investor with both financial strength and technical expertise,” Mr. Bakrin noted.
Also addressing the gathering, Lee Group Project Director Mr. Lam Wing Ki Wilkins emphasized the company’s commitment to a long-term partnership with Taraba State. “We aim to set up a multi-million-dollar sugar project that will enhance the state’s revenue, create employment, stimulate local enterprise, and empower farming communities through an inclusive out-grower scheme,” he said.
Mr. Wilkins noted that the Lee Group has operated in Nigeria for more than six decades, building a reputation in manufacturing, training, and agriculture. “With the support of His Excellency and the people of Taraba, this project can become a model for sugar development in Nigeria and a testament to effective public–private collaboration,” he added.
In response, Governor Kefas assured the delegation of his administration’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for investors, particularly in agriculture and industrial ventures. “Taraba is nature’s gift to the nation, with abundant resources and vast arable land suitable for agriculture. Security challenges have been addressed, and the state is now peaceful and safe for investment,” he said.
The governor identified Kurmi, Lau, and Ibi Local Government Areas as ideal locations for large-scale sugar cultivation and processing. He pledged full support, including land provision, to ensure the project’s success.
Governor Kefas welcomed the Lee Group, proposing the establishment of a tripartite committee comprising state officials, NSDC, and the investors to expedite the project to the next stage.
The initiative is expected to significantly advance local and national economic objectives, creating employment, driving rural development, and strengthening Nigeria’s sugar industry.
