Earlier this year, Burna Boy stirred controversy after saying that “Afrobeats lacks substance” and that “no one paved the way” for him. His remarks sparked backlash from fans and fellow artistes.

However, Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, has defended Burna Boy. Speaking in an interview on Silverbird Rhythm FM, Seun explained that Burna Boy’s comments were misunderstood and not meant to insult the Afrobeats genre.

“I don’t think he meant he didn’t derive anything from Afrobeat. African Giant has some Fela influence in it. So I believe his comment was taken out of context,” Seun said.

Beyond music, Seun also used the interview to share his strong opinions on national issues and governance, speaking passionately about the current state of the country.

On the creative side, Seun is experimenting with a new sound alongside rapper Vector. The duo has joined forces to create a unique fusion of Afrobeat and hip-hop,
