US TARGETS RUSSIAN OIL GIANTS WITH NEW SANCTIONS TO PUSH FOR UKRAINE PEACE TALKS
Washington, DC – The United States has imposed new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, in an effort to pressure Moscow into negotiating a peace deal in Ukraine. The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, targeting key players in Russia’s oil export sector.
The sanctions follow President Donald Trump’s decision to indefinitely postpone a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary. “Every time I speak to Vladimir, I have good conversations and then they don’t go anywhere,” Trump stated during a recent Oval Office discussion.
While the economic impact on Russia is expected to be minimal due to its redirected oil exports to Asia and existing price caps, the move marks a significant shift in Trump’s foreign policy. Previously, he had indicated that sanctions would be contingent on European nations halting their purchases of Russian oil. The Kremlin responded by claiming Russia is “immune” to the new sanctions.
