NIGERIAN OIL AND GAS SECTOR HIT HARD BY THREE-DAY PENGASSAN STRIKE

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari, has expressed concern over significant losses in crude oil and gas production due to a three-day strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

In a letter dated 29 September 2025, addressed to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Ojulari detailed the severe impact of the industrial action.

The letter, titled “Impact Assessment of Ongoing Industrial Action,” was also sent to the National Security Adviser and the Director General, Department of State Services.

The strike, triggered by a dispute between PENGASSAN and the Dangote Refinery, resulted in a 16 per cent drop in oil production and a 30 per cent reduction in marketed gas. Additionally, the nation experienced a 20 per cent shortfall in power supply.

The industrial action led to the shutdown of major oil terminals, gas plants, and power facilities, causing a deferment of 283,000 barrels of crude oil per day and 1.7 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily. These disruptions significantly impacted Nigeria’s two largest revenue sources, choking off vital income streams.
