Arise News Mourns Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, Killed in Abuja Armed Robbery

The Nigerian media community is in shock and mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a rising star, news anchor, reporter, and producer with the ARISE News Channel.

Known affectionately as ‘Sommie,’ the 29-year-old was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during a violent armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.

The incident has been confirmed by ARISE News management, who stated the matter is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

Sommie, born on December 26, 1995, was a cherished member of the ARISE News family and had become a vibrant voice that connected with viewers across the country.

Beyond her work on the airwaves, she was also a trained lawyer and was remembered by colleagues as a supportive professional and a friend to many. Her promising future was tragically cut short, leaving the media house and the public reeling.

The management and staff of ARISE News, through a statement by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, extended their deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, family, and loved ones. While acknowledging that Sommie’s voice is now silent, they vowed that her “spirit, passion, and legacy will endure.”

The organization also made a firm demand for justice, calling for a “speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
