Marketers Warn of Fuel Price Surge as PENGASSAN Strike Disrupts Supply
Nigerians face the prospect of escalating fuel prices and widespread power outages as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) commenced a nationwide strike on Monday, September 29, 2025. The strike is set to disrupt crude oil and gas supplies to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, raising alarms among oil marketers about severe fuel distribution challenges.
The union’s directive to halt operations is expected to constrict the domestic fuel market, driving up demand and prices. Adding to the crisis, power generation companies have announced a complete shutdown of all thermal power plants, which account for over 70% of Nigeria’s electricity supply. This development threatens to plunge the nation into darkness, severely impacting households, businesses, and the broader economy unless the Federal Government swiftly intervenes.
On Sunday, PENGASSAN declared the strike, instructing all members across offices, companies, institutions, and agencies to cease services starting at 12:01 AM on Monday, September 29, 2025.
