Court Backs Rivers LGA Elections

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has cleared the way for the conduct of the August 30 local government elections in the state.

The court, presided over by Justice Stephen Jumbo, on Friday dismissed a motion ex parte brought by Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Williams Abayomi-Stanley, seeking to halt the polls.

The suit had listed President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), and its Chairman as defendants.

In his ruling, Justice Jumbo held that the application lacked merit. However, he granted the request for substituted service of the court processes on the defendants.

With the decision, the court affirmed that the August 30 local government elections in Rivers State can proceed as scheduled.
