Africa Deserves Two Permanent Seats at UN Security Council, Tinubu Says
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed calls for reforms at the United Nations (UN), stressing the need for Africa to secure permanent representation on the Security Council.
Speaking at the plenary session on peace and stability during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, Tinubu argued that Africa’s role in global peace and security makes its demand for fair representation both just and timely.
He said the continent deserves two permanent seats with full privileges, including the right of veto, as well as additional non-permanent seats.
“It is the view of Nigeria that Africa’s quest for fair and equitable representation in the UN Security Council is a just and fair demand,” Tinubu stated.
“Indeed, Africa deserves two seats in the permanent category, with all its prerogatives and privileges, including the right of veto. Africa also deserves additional seats in the non-permanent seat category of the Security Council,” he added.
Tinubu’s remarks align with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, which articulate Africa’s unified position on UN reforms, particularly the expansion of the Security Council to correct longstanding structural imbalances.
