Tinubu Confers National Honours on Super Falcons
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on members of the Super Falcons in recognition of their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The President awarded each player the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) during a special reception held at the State House in Abuja on Thursday. The team, led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, had staged a dramatic comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 and clinch Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title.
Tinubu praised the players for displaying the “true Nigerian spirit of resilience, determination, and excellence,” adding that their performance brought pride to the entire nation and lifted the spirit of millions.
“You rose from defeat to victory, you showed what it means to be Nigerian. Your triumph is not just a sporting achievement, it is a national inspiration,” Tinubu said.
Alongside the national honours, each player was also gifted a cash reward, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) having earlier awarded Nigeria $1 million (₦1.5 billion) for winning the tournament. The President also promised continued government support for women’s football and grassroots sports development.
The Falcons’ head coach, Justin Madugu and backroom staff, and NFF officials also received commendations and national recognition.
Each player also got three bedroom apartment
This marks one of the highest civilian honours ever extended to female athletes in Nigeria and reaffirms the government’s commitment to gender equity in sports.
