Lagos State Officials Arrest Trader for Selling Harmful Yam Flour
Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has apprehended a trader, identified as Kehinde Raji, for allegedly selling spoiled yam flour (elubo) mixed with harmful chemical coloring to unsuspecting consumers.
The arrest was announced on Friday by the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to Wahab, the adulterated product has already caused health complications for several residents who consumed it. He warned that the state government would not tolerate acts endangering public health, adding that the suspect would face prosecution in accordance with Lagos State laws.
“The individual responsible has been arrested, and we will ensure she is prosecuted. No one has the right to compromise the health and safety of our people,” the commissioner said.
Environmental and health officials are reportedly tracing the distribution network of the contaminated product to prevent further public exposure. The government has also urged residents to report any suspicious food items or unethical food handling practices to the relevant authorities.
This development underscores ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to enforce food safety standards and protect consumers from harmful substances in local markets.
