APC Claims two-third Of Senate Seats

Following a wave of defections in the Senate, the All Progressives Congress (APC) now holds two-thirds of the seats in the Red Chamber

The latest shift came with the defection of four senators from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Senators Sampson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South) and Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), along with Senators Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central), formally joined the ruling party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read their defection letters during Wednesday’s plenary session. In the letters, the senators cited ongoing political developments in their constituencies and internal divisions within the PDP as key reasons for their departure.

They emphasized that their decisions were made in the best interest of their constituents and in order to continue providing effective representation in line with their constitutional mandates.

With these defections, the APC now holds 70 seats. The PDP’s representation has dropped to 28 seats, the Labour Party holds 5, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has 2, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have 1 seat each. Two seats—Edo Central and Anambra South—remain vacant.
