Breaking: FG cancels June 12 Democracy Day parade

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade to commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, 2025. This marks a significant shift in how the national holiday is observed, as the usual fanfare at Eagle Square will be replaced with official addresses and reflective events.

Instead, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m., followed by a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon. A public lecture themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” is also scheduled for later in the day at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Despite the cancellation of the parade, June 12 remains a national public holiday. Government offices, banks, and other institutions will be closed as Nigerians are encouraged to reflect on the progress and challenges of the country’s democratic journey.
