Global Displacement Reaches Record High of 83.4 Million – IOM Repor

A record 83.4 million people were internally displaced around the world by the end of 2024, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), highlighting a steep rise in forced movements driven by conflict, violence, and climate-related disasters.

The figure, released on Tuesday in the IOM’s 2025 Global Report on Internal Displacement, marks a more than twofold increase in global internal displacement since 2018. The displaced populations are spread across 117 countries and territories.

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are people who have been forced to leave their homes but remain within their country’s borders.

“These figures are a clear warning: without bold and coordinated action, the number of people displaced within their own countries will continue to grow rapidly,” said IOM Director-General Amy Pope.

The report attributes the surge to worsening crises and new outbreaks of conflict, especially in Sudan, the Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Palestine, which have triggered massive displacement in recent months. These add to the protracted displacement situations in Afghanistan, Colombia, Syria, and Yemen, where millions have remained uprooted for years.

The IOM is calling on the international community to invest in long-term solutions and coordinated humanitarian responses to tackle both the causes and consequences of displacement.
