EFCC to Question Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abus

ABUJA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced plans to question former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.

In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the anti-graft agency emphasized its stance that no individual is above the law. “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” the EFCC declared, sharing an image from the incident.

The controversy stems from a viral video circulated on X.com on Sunday by user Harrison A, who tweets under the handle #harreceipts. The footage, reportedly taken during Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April, shows him dancing as a man sprays ₦1,000 notes in front of him—a practice prohibited by Nigeria’s currency regulations.

The video sparked widespread criticism and renewed debates over selective enforcement of the law, with many social media users urging the EFCC to act without bias.

Under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, the spraying or mishandling of naira notes at public gatherings is classified as an offense punishable by law.

As of the time of reporting, Tompolo has not publicly responded to the EFCC’s statement.
