TAX REFORMS: Senate Passes Two of Four Bills After Extensive Debate

The Nigerian Senate has passed two of the four tax reform bills currently under consideration, marking a significant step in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline the country’s tax system.

The two bills that successfully scaled the third reading are the Nigerian Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2025. The passage followed a detailed clause-by-clause review and the adoption of the Finance Committee’s report, presented by its Chairman, Senator Sani Musa.

Senators deliberated for over two hours on Wednesday, making amendments to several clauses aimed at improving efficiency, boosting compliance, and enhancing revenue generation.

However, the Senate deferred action on the remaining two bills — the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2025 — pending further legislative work.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lawmakers for their diligence and announced that deliberations on the outstanding bills would continue on the next legislative day, allowing for the formal preparation and adoption of the proceedings related to the bills already passed.

The four bills form a key part of the tax reform agenda championed by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, led by Taiwo Oyedele.
