The Labour Party (LP) has announced the indefinite suspension of six high-profile members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, over what it described as “anti-party activities.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the suspension is said to take immediate effect. Others affected include Senators Darlington Nwokocha and Ireti Kingibe, Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowumi.
The decision follows the recommendations of a five-member Disciplinary Committee inaugurated on May 2, 2025, to investigate allegations of misconduct and breach of party loyalty.
“These members have been found culpable of various acts of anti-party conduct and are henceforth barred from participating in all Labour Party activities pending further review,” the statement read.
Although specific details of the alleged misconduct were not disclosed in the party’s announcement, sources within the LP say the suspensions are linked to growing tensions within the party’s leadership and accusations of collusion with opposition interests.
Political analysts note that the development could deepen internal divisions within the Labour Party ahead of upcoming elections and may spark legal and political pushback from the affected officials.
There has been no official response from Governor Otti or the suspended lawmakers as of press time.
