Senate Constitutes Oversight Committee For Rivers State Sole Administrator

The Nigerian Senate has established an 18-member committee to oversee the activities of Rivers State’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), aiming to enhance transparency and accountability in the state’s governance.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the committee’s formation during Tuesday’s plenary session, emphasizing the importance of legislative oversight in Rivers State. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has been appointed as the committee’s chairman.

The committee comprises senators from various geopolitical zones and political parties, including Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, Simon Lalong, Sani Musa, Osita Izunaso, Adamu Aliero, Osita Ngwu, Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed (APC, Jigawa). The Clerk of the Senate will serve as the committee’s secretary.

Akpabio highlighted the urgency of the committee’s mandate, stating that it must commence its oversight duties without delay to uphold democratic principles in Rivers State. He also indicated that the committee’s composition might be subject to review following further consultations.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State on March 18, 2025, following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the declaration of a state of emergency in the state by President Bola Tinubu.
