The Federal High Court in Abuja has barred Favour Kanu, sister-in-law to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from attending the next three court sessions after she live-streamed trial proceedings on her Facebook page.
Justice James Omotosho issued the order on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, following Favour Kanu’s admission of recording and broadcasting the court session. Despite a prior warning and the confiscation of her phone during an earlier sitting, the video was later found online. The judge noted that her actions could have amounted to contempt of court but opted for a temporary ban after she apologized and pledged not to repeat the offense.
Lead defense counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), also apologized on her behalf, appealing for leniency. Justice Omotosho emphasized the importance of maintaining courtroom decorum and warned against any conduct that could disrupt proceedings.
Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. The trial has experienced multiple delays since his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.
