The Kenyan government has strongly condemned the act of a shoe being thrown at President William Ruto during a public rally in Migori County on Sunday, labeling it a “shameful” incident and a significant breach of security protocols.
In widely circulated videos on social media, President Ruto is seen addressing the crowd when a shoe is hurled at him, striking his left arm. The President remained uninjured and continued with his speech, addressing concerns about the nation’s high cost of living.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for the immediate apprehension of those responsible. “Such acts of aggression against the Head of State are not only disrespectful but also undermine the country’s democratic values,” Mwaura stated.
Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, as reported by The Star newspaper. The arrests underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order during public events.
The shoe-throwing incident has sparked widespread criticism from various quarters, including Members of Parliament, who have described it as a major security lapse. The act has drawn parallels to a similar incident in 2008 when a shoe was thrown at then-U.S. President George W. Bush during a press conference in Iraq.
President Ruto has been facing mounting public discontent over economic challenges, leading to protests and calls for government accountability. Despite efforts to address these concerns, including policy adjustments and cabinet inclusivity, tensions remain high.
