Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, and team captain, William Troost-Ekong, have warned that Nigeria faces a tougher challenge ahead as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs.
The Eagles sealed their place in the playoffs after a 4-0 victory over Benin Republic, but failed to secure automatic qualification through the group stage, finishing second behind South Africa.
Speaking after the match, Chelle commended the players for their resilience and teamwork but urged them to remain focused and work harder.
“The boys gave everything, and I’m proud of their performance. But the real battle is just beginning. The playoffs will be tougher, and we must be mentally and physically ready,” he said.
Captain Troost-Ekong echoed the coach’s sentiment, stressing the need for discipline and unity in the squad.
“We are happy with this win, but we know it’s not over. The next stage will be more difficult, and we must fight together as a team to qualify for the World Cup,” Ekong stated.
The Super Eagles are set to begin their playoff campaign in November, when they will face Gabon in the first leg of the decisive qualifier.
Nigeria is seeking a return to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.
