UEFA Champions League Draw 2024-25: Complete Match Schedule, New Format

The long-anticipated UEFA Champions League draw was held in Monaco on Thursday, having some slight changes, different from the previous years.

Unlike the previous draws, there are a few changes made this time as the new format features 36 teams playing in one “league” compared to the traditional eight groups of four.

Every team was seeded and divided into four pots of nine and will play two games (one home and one away) against randomly drawn clubs from each pot.

Having 36 teams this time, they will all compete in a single “league” with the top eight advancing directly to the Round of 16.

Those who finish Nos. 9-16 move on as seeded teams into the knockout phase playoffs, while Nos. 17-24 advance to the playoff unseeded, with a two-legged tie to determine who reaches the Round of 16.

According to UEFA’s ranking, there is an extra place for the fifth-best European league. This means that France’s Ligue 1 now has three automatic qualifiers.

In addition, there is an extra berth for each of the two leagues with the highest coefficient ranking from last season in UEFA competition, which this year are Germany and Italy.

The remaining extra slot goes to a national champion to emerge from the qualifying rounds.

Earlier, participating teams played six games in the group stage, facing each opponent home and away. Now the clubs will each have eight games, one each against their eight opponents.

The 36 teams will be split into four seeded pots of nine. Every club will play two teams from each pot, one at home and one away.

No team will come up against another club from the same domestic league as them, and every club can only face a maximum of two teams from any one country.

In past years, the group stage ended in December, but the expansion of the Champions League means the two extra matchdays will be staged in January.

The number of games is increasing from 96 in the old group stage to 144 in the new league phase.

Winning its 15th title with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in last season’s final, Real Madrid is the defending champion.

This season’s Champions League final is scheduled for May 31, 2025, at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
