Flavour Comments On Contemporary African And Afrobeat Music

Nigerian singer, Chinedu Okoli, well known as Flavour, has commented on Afrobeats and African music.

Flavour, known across Africa, and the world, for his hit song, “Nwa Baby” said, “I am not an Afrobeats artist. I am an African artist,” while speaking as a guest on The Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope.

The prolific singer also revealed that he wasn’t bothered with such a conversation as he doesn’t identify as an Afrobeats artist.

Considering the global impact of the genre of music from Nigeria, the 2nite Entertainment signee was asked how he felt about being left out of the list of Afrobeats’ biggest global exports.

In the time past, Flavour also promoted Nigerian and African music with his songs, before the emergence of the current set of Afrobeat music stars.

Speaking further, Flavour who began his musical career as a drummer for a local church also affirmed that the microscope is currently on Afrobeats and how it’s mostly what the media focuses on while neglecting other music across the continent.

“Most time, the media just talk about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, you have to talk about Flavour,” he said.

With over two decades in the music industry, the award-winning veteran has also collaborated with several African artists including Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platnumz.
