Senator Godswill Akpabio of the All Progressives Congress, has been elected President of the Senate.
The former governor of Akwa Ibom represented the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial Zone was served as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022.
Akpabio, who was paired with the senator representing Kano South, Jibrin Barau is the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
Akpabio and former Governor of Zamfara State, Senator-elect Abdulazeez Yari, went toe to toe while the voting in the election of a new Senate President commenced.
Akpabio was declared president of the senate after Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk of the National Assembly, made the announcement having garnered 63 votes against 46 votes from his rival.
The election started before 9 a.m. against the announced time of 10 a.m.
