An 18-year-old apprentice in Anambra State has reportedly impregnated 10 girls within a span of five months, including his master’s daughter and a salesgirl, according to the state’s Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
The startling revelation was made public during a live broadcast on social media by the commissioner on Wednesday, as part of a wider discussion on rising cases of sexual irresponsibility and exploitation among youths in the state.
According to Obinabo, the young man was enrolled as an apprentice under a master in a commercial trade, but just three months into his training, he had impregnated both his employer’s daughter and a female sales attendant working in the same environment. The incident led to his immediate dismissal from the apprenticeship programme.
“After investigations, we discovered that this same boy has put 10 girls in the family way within just five months. This is highly disturbing and unacceptable,” Obinabo said, noting that the ministry is exploring possible interventions, including counseling, public sensitization, and legal steps where necessary.
She further called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to take more responsibility for the moral and social upbringing of young people, especially boys, warning that the state government will not tolerate the growing trend of sexual recklessness and abuse.
The ministry is expected to follow up on the matter with stakeholders in child protection, adolescent health, and law enforcement.
