The United States President, Barack Obama, is to host the first African Leaders Summit in Washington from August 4 to 6.
The meeting will bring together U.S. policymakers and over 50 African heads of state, While the agenda includes issues of governance, civil society organisations, democracy promotion and respect for human rights.
Other issues are security and trade.
Africa has experienced a decade and a half of growing democracy, through 2005.
Over the past 20 years, the growth of democracy has taken two separate paths in sub-Saharan Africa: Democracy has dramatically grown in Southern and West Africa, while East and Central Africa have experienced declines.
