Manchester United are closing-in on a £22m deal to sign Thomas Meunier after fending off interest from Arsenal to land the Paris Saint-Germain right-back.
Meunier joined PSG from Club Brugge in 2016 and has contributed 20 assists and 12 goals in 101 appearances to help the French giants win a whole host of honours including 2 Ligue 1 titles and 4 domestic cups.
However, the 27-year-old’s future has been in doubt in recent months as he has just one year remaining on his contract and PSG look set to cash-in as Meunier has so far failed to agree terms over an extension.
The situation alerted clubs here in the Premier League with Arsenal and Man Utd strongly linked with a move this summer and it initially looked like the Gunners were leading the race to sign the Belgian international.
Unai Emery is in the market for a new right-back to compete with Hector Bellerin as Stephan Lichtsteiner and Carl Jenkinson are expected to leave the Emirates this summer while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is more comfortable playing in midfield.
Meunier emerged as a prime target and Gazzetta Dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira claimed on Friday that Arsenal were in advanced talks with PSG to secure a deal after offering the full-back a five-year contract.
However, it looks like Man Utd have now hijacked Arsenal’s proposed deal as Belgian outlet DH.be claim the Red Devils are on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Meunier after agreeing to meet PSG’s £22m [€25m] asking price.
The report says Man Utd are working hard trying to wrap-up the deal swiftly after Meunier made it clear he was ready to snub Arsenal’s advances in favour of moving to Old Trafford as he’s a boyhood United fan.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the look out for a new right-back to compete with Diogo Dalot next season as Antonio Valencia has left the club while Ashley Young turns 34 next month so it seems Meunier has been identified as an ideal replacement.
We’ll have to see if there are any further developments over the coming days as this transfer story seems to be evolving all the time but as it stands it looks like Man Utd are in pole position ahead of Arsenal to land the Belgian right-back.
